Part A
I asked Arianna how come people gave her the nickname Arii and she replied with "there was another girl in my class named Arianna so they just started calling me Arii." Those piercings... how come you have them. What made you get a bar across your ear? I got this piercing because not that many people have it and at the time it seemed cool. But after while i got tired of it.
I think Arianna just spit out answers and didn't really think about them because she was bothered that i was asking her.

Part B
I have many nicknames such as lefty, steffie, and blue (because of my eyes), i tend to act like i don't care when i get in trouble, and i want to get a tattoo because i think there cool and represent significant things. I don't think i need approval from others but i do need approval from myself so i make sure i have the newest sneakers that come out or something from the latest trend.

Theorizing of cool

I was sitting in class when Andy walked over and caught Leah and I on Facebook. He brought up the point that we feel a sense of loneliness and emptiness so we find other things to distract us and keep us entertained.  I guess i agree with his statement because the way in which we distract ourselves always involve other people or some type of human connection. Such as texting, going on Facebook, using instant messenger or calling someone. I believe all these attempts to distract ourselves are useless attempts of filling empty spaces inside of us because those distractions end up getting played out. I think that boredom plays a role in emptiness because when where bored we feel empty and feel the need to keep going and find something new to do.

When I'm bored i can never seem to find something that will entertain me other then my friends. So I've come to the conclusion that being around people who appreciate you and love you will fill that empty filling inside of you. The companionship of another person really helps fill the empty feeling or loneliness of a person.

Still needs to be worked on...

merchants of cool

What is it about sex and showing off your body that attracts young people so much? Is it the sense of maturity or the attention of others? After watching "Merchants of gold" it was obvious that commercials and celebrity's all brainwash us. (the viewers) As a young kid when the spice girls where out it was cool to have pants like sporty spice, or a lollipop like baby spice. If only we knew it was a fad that would soon be outplayed just like every other trend. Yet trends are meant to end sex appeal will be on going as long as its showed on t.v, the Internet, and everyday activities. And as long as celebrities are showing its okay to show half of your body, then all the viewers will find it okay as well.

whether its from the "life" commercials( an add for water with animated football players that turn into lizards), to commercials about coke (also advertising a football player). Are corporations grabbing the attention of viewers by trying to sell  products that mentors such as athlete's would use. Each commercial/corporation has a mission to draw in there viewers with someone, or something they can look up. I don't think that's evil i actually think its genius because people are so brainwashed by the media that they don't bother to overlook the obvious.

There should be an age limit to certain things being advertised but corporations could care less about the age of the viewer as long as they buy there products. My mom and where talking and she brought up the Mac and PC commercials. There are two guys ones okay looking and skater boy hair, and then the other guy has a pocket protector nerd glasses and greasy hair. Now in relation to "cool" the Mac guy who is way better looking then the PC guy is trying to get viewers to buy a Mac and get money for the corporation that he is working for. We are in a trance... buy product, pay corporations, and then the corporation pays the mentor that we all "look" up to. Merchants of cool definitely changed my perspective of certain media ads.

After reading over the comments left on the blog by FriendsForever it looked as if they were going over a horoscope, but that they thought if someone is a book worm as long as they stay up with the new trends and are good at something that makes you cool. comment's on short story's

Leah's-The line "Giselle raises her hand with excitment and a tiffany's braclet hanging from her wrist" because you describe how she's "cool" because she has expensive name brand things. It's also "Cool" how your character is considered "cool" because she is from a new york.
Suoinorra's- It was nice how you made the character come from a different state and how they had the challenge of fitting in with new clothes and new people. Your dialogue wasn't as interesting as it could have been but it was nice how you had every character say something.

Matt's- I thought it was really creative how you used Jonathan the cool person but then turn the story around so that Charlie was the main character and the definition of "cool". Your last sentence "For Charlie. being an individual with a voice, was cool." really tied the whole story up and made an impact on me, and changed my opinion about being what it really means to be "cool".

Yurelis-
Wassup Yurelis I thought your story was good and creative. It was very similar to how teenagers really act and how many kids only want to be your friend based of the things you have. I thought your whole idea of being a genuine friend and thats what makes you cool was a great interpertation of the word "cool"

Jess's- I thought your story was cool and showed the smart side of being cool.

cool kidz!

"New txt message"

"Yo wassup E"

"Nothing chillen... u?"

"that's wassup an just chillen in the park... Have you seen the the new Jordan's?!"

"man you should go to school... why you skipping? and hell yea there tuff i got them the day they came out"

"schools whack and dam I'm jealous"

"I disagree but I'm going back to class peace man"

"peace"

My day consist of laughing, making jokes in class, and occasionally skipping part of math class to go to the gym and play basketball.

"Yo i always see you in the halls"

"yea so what? i have all 90's in my classes so blow me son!"

"ahahaha You to much E"

I stroll through the halls with no true destination but always seem to say hi to people to pass by.

"Egypt how come your never in class?"

"Ms. Lack i am class just not when you come around to my table"

"hahaha real funny i hope to see you tomorrow"

"No doubt ms. Lack but I'm off to my next class!"

I've learned over the years in school that i need to respect the teachers whether i want to or not. They determine my grades and that determines whether or not i play basketball... seeing how basketball is my passion I do everything i can to keep my grades up.

"Yo mama is so fat she keeps donuts under her belly fat!"

"ahahahah E your so funny"

"Egypt if you don't stop disrupting the class!"

"Sorry Mr. tube i have a.d.d i can't stay focused for long"

"It's alright just try harder"

What's cool?!

I don't have any questions about being cool. I find the word "cool" to be a very debatable word. On Friday we discussed how someone can be seen as cool for skipping school and then if someone graduates college with a full scholarship they are also seen as cool. So depending on the context in which cool is being used it have very different meanings.

There are many different types of "cool" there are the kids who are jock cool, rocker cool, skater cool.. etc. Each group has there own type of cool, and each clique view's cool as something different. I find cool someone who can be associated with one specific clique but still be able to be unique and there own person. Someone who doesn't always follow there friends, they act as a leader. I think that even if someone follows all the trends and wears things or has things that everyone else has, if they wear it in a different way they are considered cool because they are turning the trend into there own style.

Our society is based off of money, so when someone is being talked about there social class usually comes up and then they are judged. But some of my friends shop at second hand stores and still are considered cool because they make up there own style which is considered unique and different. There are also many celebrities that started the trend of second hand stores so i don't think anyone should be judged based on how much there outfit cost in relation to coolness. This relates to feed because you weren't considered cool if you didn't have the latest updates on your feed.

This all ties back to how our society bases one another on the latest things instead of looking at the persons uniqueness... such ass if they can turn the latest trend into something that only a few people will have.

The Computer

I look into your screen and you don't seem very green
My brain is mush but your way better to look at then a bush
I stay in all day even when it's not grey to spend some quality time that doesn't pay
Now for once in a day i put you away but then realize you need to stay!

What i am talking about is the hammer because it's a reflection of myself.
When you first read my poem it makes you think about what is "green" why am i explaining this emotion. This makes me think of a lot of other things such as a cellphone an ipod a clock... etc. I felt that this is a part of my life and relevant to everyday life! The most interesting aspect of my poem was how i rhymed everything together. And people assumed that it was something else instead of what it was.

final paper

The effects of Digitization

Introduction:

Society has found many ways to get common information to everyone. Whether it’s using a phone, using a computer or going to the local starbucks to access the Internet, there are many possible ways to get the information you need. All this technology might seem great until you notice how socially unbalanced you become. Instead of seeing someone in person we text them, we spend more hours on the computer surfing the web and chatting then we do seeing the actual person. We live fake unhealthy and unrealistic lives digital lives. Digital media has given society an excuse to become socially challenged and brainwashed.

Argument 1:

T-Mobil, Verizon, Apple, and Dell. It seems to me that in there own categories (Phone companies and computer brands) they are all in competition with each other. It’s very funny how oblivious people are, because when it gets down to it each device does the same thing as the next. So even if you paid more for the “better” product you are going to receive the same acts as the cheaper product. As a society we are tricked into following trends In order to fit in. Almost every teenager in School Of The Future is connected to Face book or twitter. Face book is an easy way to torment, judge, and make fun of kids with out being judged yourself. There is also the good side of face book which is how it keeps you in contact with so many people and how you make new friends ect… Although Face book seems fun and amusing it is all made of digital representations of things that occurred, so just like a tabloid magazine we as viewers are left to assume and judge things in our own point of view. As people in society get more hooked onto Internet sources such as Face book and Twitter they become socially challenged and lose their ability to make friends in a non-digital way. “The biggest surprise (perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising) was that Facebook’s 35-54 year old demographic segment not only continued to grow the fastest, but it accelerated to a 276.4% growth rate over the past 6 months.” http://www.istrategylabs.com/2009/01/2009-facebook-demographics-and-statistics-report-276-growth-in-35-54-year-old-users/ This quote shows just how addictive face book is and how even older people are getting addicted to something so simple as face book.

Argument 2:

From the age of 5 you are able to play them. You get so zoned into them you forget to do normal body functions (such as peeing and blinking) they are known as video games! Many teenagers and adults spend hours upon hours playing video games.I realized that I am good pressing buttons on a plastic guitar. No matter how many achievements I got for the game, it didn't help me in any way. It's not like I won a car or a thousand dollars. I wasn't aware that I was running up my electric bill and that I was isolated from the rest of my apartment for a whole day. I also noticed that yesterday I felt the laziest.” This is a statement made by Matt S after he spent all day playing video games. He spent hours unlocking levels and killing animated people to realize that he accomplished absolutely nothing. For the video project many of us recorded our self’s playing video games, and to my surprise everyone’s reaction was exactly the same. We were all unaware of our surroundings and were so entranced into the video game that we looked like zombies… completely life less. Living a life where half the time we aren’t aware of our surroundings is unhealthy an effects us mentally. It leaves us with a sense of emptiness that can’t be filled. “Over the past few years I’ve had an uncomfortable sense that someone, or something, has been tinkering with my brain, remapping the neural circuitry, reprogramming the memory.” http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200807/google Nicholas the author of this article is describing how his usage of google has turned his mind into a blob of confusion and how he often wanders off task just to look onto google, instead of focusing on the task in front of him.

           Argument 3:

The opening scene of Wall-e was of the town he lived in. But not just any town the town had buildings that were made up of old trash and had oil tanks in the middle of the town towering over all the other buildings.  As the movie goes on Wall-e enters a city that is fully reliable on technology. The people sit in a chair all day and talk into a screen. There is a scene were one of the men get knocked off the chair and he is so fully reliable on technology that he is unable to get up without the help of a robot (Wall-e). If Wall-e is a for shadow of what our society is going to turn into we all need to change our ways immediately. My mom looks exactly like one of the people from Wall-e because she sits in her chair most of the day (until she goes to work at 2) watching television and each day she seam’s to get more lazy and I find myself bringing her more things when she can easily get up and get them herself. As a society we are getting to lazy and realieing on technology too much. Our minds are being mashed into Jell-O and all that keeps us sane is the fact that not everything is turned into digital media yet.

            Opposing view:

Although digital media has bad effects there is also a good side to it. It gives people the opportunity to broadcast important ideas, such as global warning, voting, and other significant things in the world (such as the war in Iraq) it is very easy to get hooked on something that gives you information as quick as a click.  Computers give you information that is regurgitated from real happenings/ facts, it allows us to research anything we like… there are really no boundaries. “The constant improvement of digital technology has helped the economy while simultaneously reducing resources consumption and social communication in our age has lessened loneliness and helped people live happier lives.” With the Internet so easy to access there are many ways for unsocial people to find friends or even love, such as face book and e-harmony. So digital media can be a good thing as long as you don’t abuse it and over use it.

Connection:

This all connects to the book Feed because M.T Anderson relates our society to this fake electronically based society that all ave computers in their minds that shoots regurgitated information out to them. This book is a perfect example of how our society acts based off of electronics we get so isolated we don't pay attention to whats going on around us. This also connects to everything bad is good for you because the author stated that the digital world allows you to open up to things you never thought of but other people believe it is bad because reading came first. I think people aren't used to all the new technology and it confuses them and find it a lot easier to use a book to find out the information they need instead of going on a computer that can freeze and delete your work at any time.

 Significance:

The study about digitization is significant because it’s good to know how something that is improving and growing so fast affects us. The digital world has evolved so much over the past 20 yrs. For example how the records turned into a cassette, which then turned into a CD, which soon turned into a digital megabyte that is now accessible through the Internet. It is very important for everyone to know how the digital word is evolving because they need to be aware of how there future is changing and being effected.

            Conclusion:

I have explained my opinion on the digital world and how I believe it is bad for us and is slowly corrupting our social and mental skills. Even though there are good aspects of digital media it seems as if our society is going to start and rely on technology too much and soon be fully dependent on it when as a society in earlier years we did fine with out all this technology. It was a lot easier to stay focused on what needed to be done when there was less technology. So as time goes on and technology expands I think we should all watch out how much time we spend using it before we all turn into lazy over weight people who can’t do anything without the help of a robot.

comments on Matt's and Leah's

Leah's
I thought your thesis was outstanding and really put everything we learned into a nut shell. Your outline is a good start but definitely be more elaborate in your paper and use evidence, and make sure to tie everything back. I think your paper will be interesting and you will bring up many good details about the unit.

Matt's
I really liked how you got into detail and wrote your arguments out. Your thesis should be a little more on point, and hit more of the main points from the unit. Don;t forget about your conclusion and tying everything back together and leaving us off with a stunning last sentence. Your off to a great start keep up the good work.

Outline

Thesis: Digital media has given society an excuse to become socially challenged and mentally brainwashed.

Intro: Society has found many ways to get information. Weather its using a phone, using a computer or going to the local Starbucks to access the Internet, there are many ways to get information fast. It all seems great until you start to see how socially unbalanced you become. Instead of seeing someone in person you text them, instead of expressing your feelings you use a device. As a society we are using digital media as a barrier to hide our true self's.

Arguments: We are more worried about having the newest technology and fitting in instead of how its going to effect us. (I'm going to use face book and twitter as evidence and how many people are accsed to it.)

How we are turned into zombies when we are enhanced into digital media. Such as texting or playing video games. (I will use the video assignment as evidence)

Compare the movie wall-e to the corruption of our brains.

Conclusion: Tie everything back up such as how electronics are a good thing but to much of it is corrupting our brains and social skills. Restate my thesis and end of with a stunning closing sentence.

Matt's treasure hunt

I found your homework 11 very comical. Even though you overdosed on electronics you were very open about the whole experience. I thought this was one of your better blog post because you could connect to what you were writing about and it was obvious that you enjoyed writing about it. You also got into depth about everything, you explained the new things you unlocked and i images of you playing call of duty and guitar hero. I also noticed how you didn't have very many spelling or grammar mistakes which shows you took my advice and reread your work. :)

It was funny how after you won guitar hero you felt really accomplished but the next morning you felt like none of it mattered anymore and in the long run you accomplished nothing but maybe getting a cramp in your hand from holding a controller all day. That brings up a great point how after we do something electronically we end up not really being effected by it other then our eyes hurting or our hands burning from the cramp we get.

I feel like your post connects to many discussions we had in class, because you brought up how you were isolated from the rest of your house when you were playing and that connects to how everyone thought that we all looked like zombies in our videos. When we get enhanced into something digital we don't pay attention to our surroundings and lose track of everything.

You took my advice about rereading your work so i don't know what to really say to improve your post except for you can always go deeper in your ideas. If you think your done try and expand your ideas with a different point of view or add evidence to support your idea.

You made me wonder about how much time i really spend on playing video games and how even though i may feel accomplished at that moment or for a few moments after the next day it won't mean anything to me and it doesn't help me achieve anything in life.

I hope to read more post like this one.

Leah's treasure hunt

Leah Leah Leah :)

I read through your post and your feed A stood out to me the most. I really liked how you evaluated Titus and brought up the topic of how he is scared of living life without the feed because he rely's on it so much. At the beginning of the post you connect Feed to your personal life and really got into detail and i thought it made the post a lot more meaningful because you weren't talking aimlessly.

Your main points of how you connect the feed to television and cellphones but how as a teenager we still think on our own...i feel like that was very insightful because in class discussions i don't recall anyone bringing up that point. They either agree or disagree that we are similar to the feed. Another great point was when you compared Titus to us and violet to the writer... i never thought of it like that and it helped me get a better understanding of the book and why certain things were written the way they were.

It is obvious that both the feed and the digital world connect. As you stated in your opening paragraph televisions and cellphones are similar to the feed because they shoot out information to us and most people in society try to buy the newest device that comes out. When if you really stop to think about it... THERE ALL THE SAME!

I think that if you added some specific quotes to your blogs when referring to Feed or any other book we read in class. I really enjoyed reading this blog though you connected everything together and you brought up really good main points that i wouldn't have thought of.

Your last sentence "I think the author is right about what he is saying and i did not really think of it as much and it kind of made me feel like I'm dumbing down with the future technology." really made me think about how when i beg my mom for a new cellphone when my phone does the same exact thing i should think about how the company/ device is really brain washing me and just wants money.

I can't wait to read you blogs to come i really enjoyed this one.

feed B

Feed was definitely in my eyes was a great way to show a common problem that most of us are going through... our addiction to electronics/ digital media. M.T Anderson was creative in which he decided to bring this to our attention. He uses the art of writing to not warn us but show us how our actions are really effecting us in the future.

M.T Anderson not only writes about our daily activities but also uses certain techniques to point out how bad our habits really are. One of his main points of how we are turning into zombies because of all the digital use related to the project we did were we recorded ourselves doing digital media. Everyone looked like a zombie and had no idea of what was going on around them except for what they were looking at or doing. This relates to feed because everyone in feed try's to fit in by having a "Feed" and in the real world we all try to fit in by having the newest ipod, computer or cellphone.

For my project id like to show how electronics are corrupting our minds and how in the end we are all going to turn into non social human beings. I also want to try and get across how it's not toatly bad to use digital media, just how it should be used in moderation.

feed A

First thing i thought about after reading a couple of chapters of Feed was how similar the Feed seemed to a blue tooth. We use blue tooth's as a way of communication just like the feed does. We talk into air and wait for an electronic voice to answer us, Titus looks into his feed and becomes distant from the world because he watches a world wide television in his mind, his relationship's with his friends and family are nothing more then a digital connection that holds no emotions.

Feed definitely connects to how teenagers act. We usually just party and don't care much about anything else. Just like in Feed we follow all the new trends like the new sneakers, phones, clothes anything to fit in with everyone, such as the girls in Feed did with the lesions and how they become cool because t.v stars had them.

As i read on i find Feed a description of how we are as a society now... not what we are going to become. I think the author was trying to bring to our attention how socially dumb we are becoming and how electronics are effecting us personally and as a whole. The main character Titus is a perfect example of a teenager who uses electronics to much. He doesn't even call his brother by his real name... he barley talks to his dad, and his mom is so busy loving his little brother. Thing is Titus doesn't even take the time to reach out to anyone he is to busy worrying about his feed and being caught up in a fake version of life. Such as teenagers do now. We text all the time instead of talking to the person right in front of us and we rather take face book photos and flaunt our fakeness instead of being original an not relying on digital media to keep us entertained.

Hw 11

After going over all this electronic media i have decided to lesson how much of it i use. I used to be on aim and texting and talking on the phone while doing homework. Now i don't sign on aim when doing homework and turn my phone off until I'm done with my homework. This was really effective because i was more concentrated on my work and i finished a lot quicker because i was distracted.

In school i stopped texting as much. I only text in between classes now and i see an improvement in my grades already. With all the quizzes i already took I've done a lot better because I'm more focused in class.

Im glad I have cut down on my use of electronics because it gives me more time to work on school and interact with my family more.

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000737.htm

I looked up can Mac's get viruses? I choice to look this up as one of my links because in class today during English a girl said "My computer has a virus" Everyone got all excited and took pictures of the virus because it was a Mac and Mac's aren't supposed to get viruses.

Reading through the link it explain why Mac's are less prone to viruses and that's because it's build on the UNIX kernel which is one of the most oldest and safest systems to use. I found this interesting because if computer companies know this why don't they all use the same system so then no computer can get a virus? Companies seem very stingy with there software and instead of trying to look out for the customers they only look out for themselves and the money they make.

http://gadgetress.freedomblogging.com/2008/12/03/consumer-reports-verizon-tops-for-cell-phone-service/5782/

People are definitely addicted to there cellphone... weather they have the new iPhone or the newest sidekick people mostly teens are always texting. T-Mobil didn't have any service this weekend or today. All the kids were going crazy because they couldn't sign on to aim or get on the Internet. Now with Verizon the best cellphone serviced company that never has happened.

After reading the article on why consumers think Verizon is the best network i found it interesting how they judge Verizon on there service instead of all the aspects of the cellphone. Such as does it go on the Internet does it have the best keyboard etc.  They just based it on does it always work.

I don't really play video games very much but i do like having the newest games, so ever so often i look at the new releases of games. As i was scrolling down the page i saw the preview for the saw 3 game. Now that movie is one of the most nasty, sickest, mind bending movies I've ever watch. So to even think about how that is turned into a video game just makes me wonder what it will teach all of these kids. Will they all think its okay to act like that in real life? Video games are becoming to realistic for me.

comments on leah's video

You don't have a video so i am going to comment what you said about your video.

It's funny how you thought you looked like a zombie and then you commented on my video and also thought i looked like a zombie. It seems like when ever someone is interacting with technology they just concentrate on that instead of the normal things we do.

Your main idea of how we get so inhanced into digital media that we become lifeless is very important. I agree with you that we do become lifeless and its like were not even in our own state of mind or body...Thats why i think everything should be done in moderation.

You should have tried to put your video up so i could have connected to it more and see what you meant by "zombie" but overall i like how you analysied your own actions.

I cant wait to read/see more of you blogs.

HW 9 response to leah's comments

I appriciated your input about my video. You really anaylized it and connected my actions to yourself. Your comments such as would i want my younger siblings or children in the future doing this really made me think about how much digital media im using when i could be doing something way more productive... so the answer to that question would be no i wouldn't want them using so much technology because they should be spending there time on something a lot more productive. I agree that i looked like a zombie when i was playing and most people do. They put all of there normal motions on hold... such as peeing, eating, or even not scratching an itch they have. I like how you asked me a question to push my thinking. I enjoyed your feedback thanks for taking the time to comment on my video.

HW9 response to matt's comments of my video

After i read your comment i saw that you spent a lot of time writing your response. It made me smile how you thought my video was funny and it made you laugh as well. Your comments were very thoughtful and will help me further with my videos. Such as when you said i should record my whole face instead of just the side of it. When you starting talking about how my video reminded you of yourself and how you curse at it, it made me think how in reality when i lose i do curse at the game and i throw the control. I was just keeping everything in moderation such as language. It's interesting how both of our opinions are the same about how we get so withdrawn into something thats not even real, and how our body movements only happen if there connected to the electronic where playing with. Thanks for the insightful comments.

Hmm... it's easy to see how drawn in we get when we are using electronics. While watching your video i liked how you wen on your phone or ipod and showed us what you were doing, so it didn't look like you were doing nothing.

The main idea was how mesmerized someone gets when using electronics and when we use electronics we use more then one.

This connects to my video because i was using electronics and not really paying attention to anything around me. Just like you didnt.

I dont really know how to expand you ideas on a video but good work

im excited to see your next video.

interview with my best friend

I asked Christina "what do you think about technology" Her first response was "it's good for us but it makes us lazy". I then asked her to elaborate and she said "it helps us find new medicine, cures. It makes us lazy because certain things we used to do such has having quality time with our friends we are sitting at home watching t.v or on the computer." I asked her if she found any technology unimportant such as an i-pod or a computer... her response was "i cant think of any"... she took an extra 5 minuets to rethink her answer and she finally came up with the thought that game systems are pointless because we can play them on the computer and why have a "palm" (which is a personal organizer) when you can get a black berry that does the same exact thing and more! We started discussion how many electronics we own and she said she owns an i-pod a stereo system, 2 broken psp's a PlayStation 2, 1 working phone, and 4 broken ones, a computer, and last but not least a wii. Seems like Christina wasted a lot of money on junk.

We then had a normal conversation but she went off on a tangent about technology. "Technology takes place of intimate relationship's and friendship. We don't write letters anymore, or really visit each other. Instead we just text all day. Technology has made us very dependent, and obsessed. Where ever some people go they have to bring or be on there phones or i-pods at all times."

When i first "interviewed" Christina i text her and asked her questions... technology is definitely a faster way to get in contact with people.

first video

After watching my video i looked like i wasn't really there...i was to into the game like moving the control from side to side when in reality that has no effect. I never really thought i got that into a video game, my facial reactions don't show any emotions other then a little frustration because at the end i lost. I don't think anyone should get that into a video game you aren't really yourself as you can tell all your focus is on the game. They should be played in moderation.

Hw # 7

The two main questions i asked the strangers were... 1) did you think technology would evolve so quickly when you were younger. and 2) do you think technology is effecting our community in a good or bad way? Most people responded with yes its a good thing but they had no evidence to back up there opinion on why they thought that. There was one guy who stated "globally it widens us but alienates our smaller communities". Since we were going up to random people i think many people were caught off guard and just spit out the first thing that came to there heads such as "i don't know" " oh i never really thought about it" It's strange how people don't pay very mind to things there addicted to.

It was interesting how certain people just spit out answers with no real thought mean while others would think for a second and bring in other aspects such as politics etc. A guy responded to "do you think technology is effecting our community in a good or bad way?" by saying "yes it has changed the world in both a good and bad way. Good because people have a base to contribute good ideas nationally on the t.v and the Internet, but it is effecting us on a bad way because it gives people easy access to be racist and give out crazy ideas" This guy really thought about what to say and gave us a statement that could help widen out ideas on digital media.

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

I interviewed my mom Maryann. As i was asking her questions i noticed how in between each sentence or so she would glance at the t.v and get distracted. The 3 questions i asked were 1) What digital media do you use the most and why? 2)Why are you attracted to certain media and not others? 3) As a kid did you think technology would evolve so much? Her responses seemed more regurgitated instead of thoughtful except for the last question. Her response for number one was "T.V because it's entertaining and i can get my information when i want to such as weather, news, and show schedules. Her second response was " I prefer T.V because it is visually stimulating" Her third response which i found the most interesting was "Not as quickly as it has in the past 20 years, such as the VCR evolving from the beta which meant you could tape shows. Also when i was younger i had vinyl records, then it went to tapes, then to Cd's. Cd's were supposed to be unscratchable and unbreakable... but look how false that turned out. Now a day's you can't buy VHS tapes or certain equipment because it's out of prints and not being manufactured as much. Sometimes i think an alien landed with all this technology to teach us. (little joke)"  I wonder what made her so much interested in this question then the others? Her response's were more standard then thoughtful.

It was interesting how you didn't just agree or disagree with the idea of electronics are good or bad. You used evidence to prove that it is good and bad it showed that you are opened minded about the situation. After reading your blog it is obvious that you think electronic are good for u but should be used in moderation. I agree with your idea of moderation because if everyone stayed inside to play video games we would be obese. Some ways that you could further your response is by using evidence from our in class discussion and just expanding your thoughts and opinions. Your blog made me think how i should use my electronics in moderation and actually take time to get up and do something instead of just watching t.v or texting. I enjoyed reading your blog hope to read more.

my reaction to matt s. post

Your thoughts on what the digital world is doing to us was very interesting. I noticed how you used mulitple examples to back up your ideas, like the refrence back to computers and all the viruses an how we every computer has spell check to help us out. I agree with you on how the younger generation is to electronically developed and how us as a society wouldn't be able to function with out the use of electronics. When you said the statement about our generation/ society turning in to the movie WALL E it showed that your listend during our class disscusion and usesed what we talked about in class as a refrence for your blog. A good way to improve your blog post is to just reread your work, because some things you wrote were in the wrong tense. While reading your post i thought a lot about how even as a teenager i spend a ton of time texting and on the computer when i should actually be doing my homework or studying, but even as i move on grade wise the teachers are getting a lot more technically advanced. Which make it easier to get distracted instead of working. I really enjoyed reading your post it kept me interested and kept me wanting to read more.

What makes people so addicted to electronics? Is it the barrier it holds or the expansion it gives someone to be in contact with so many people. Some people find it easier to express there feelings over a text instead of confronting the person. Does this mean a person is emotionally unstable or just to lazy to go meet someone. Instead of calling someone you just text them. What makes texting so much easier then actually calling the person? Is this new obsession a good thing for our community or is it corrupting our brains.
